This Saturday the Wilkes University football team hosts FDU-Florham, as each team looks for its first Middle Atlantic Conference victory. The Devils come into the game with a 1-5 record, 0-3 in conference play, while the Colonels are 3-3 so far this season, dropping their last three games to conference opponents.
Last year Wilkes acquired its first victory of the season against FDU by a score of 24-14 in Madison, N.J. The Colonels were never down in the game, out-gaining the Devils by 50 yards and intercepting three passes on the day. Running back
Harry Reese (Plymouth, PA/Wyoming Valley West) ran for a personal best 95 yards, while quarterback
Rob Johnson (Bridegwater, N.J./Bridgewater) threw for 80 yards and a touchdown.
This year both teams find themselves in similar situations, and after Saturday's contest only one team will remain winless in MAC play. FDU-Florham will rely on the running and passing abilities of senior Quarterback Bill Winters, who leads the team in rushing with 52 yards per game, and passing with 246 yards per contest. The Devils are averaging 379 yards of total offense per game, but surrendering 440 yards to their opponents.
Wilkes will look to quarterback
Rob Johnson (Bridegwater, N.J./Bridgewater) and running backs
Zach Tivald (Edison, NJ/Edison) and
Harry Reese (Plymouth, PA/Wyoming Valley West) to carry the load offensively, while playmakers like
Corey Gilroy (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore),
Kevin Gerhart (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and
Tim Lombreglia (Sparta, N.J./Pope John) will be expected to keep the Devils out of the end zone. Johnson is averaging just under 180 yards per game through the air, while Tivald and Reese are combining for 56 yards on the ground. Johnson's main target,
Jordan D'Emilio (Stowe/Saint Pius X), has 33 catches for 388 yards so far in 2009, while
Gennaro Zangardi (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston) has three touchdown receptions.
The game will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Ralston Field in Edwardsville, Pa. Live stats can be viewed by clicking
