The Wilkes University men's soccer team had two players honored by the conference office for their efforts this past weekend. Junior goalkeeper
Kaleb Smith (Beavertown, Pa./Medd-West) received Freedom Conference defender/goalie of the week, while freshman forward
Joe Brennan (Oakdale, CT/Montville) was named the Freedom Player of the week.
The Colonels needed a victory against DeSales University on Saturday to secure a place in the Freedom Conference tournament, and both Brennan and Smith came up big for Wilkes in its 1-0 win over the Bulldogs.
Smith had six saves, including two after the Colonel goal as the game was winding down, for his fourth shutout of the season. This is the second Freedom Conference honor Smith has earned this year.
Brennan scored the lone goal for the Colonels in the win on a pass from
Ed Zulkoski (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood), his fifth score of the season. Three of Brennan's goals in 2009 have been game-winning.
