COLONELS POST DECISIVE WIN OVER NO. 28 YORK

Smith garners major decision in win

The No. 19 Wilkes Colonels took an impressive 28-9 win over No. 28 York on Friday night in the Marts Center, snapping a two-match losing skid. 
 
The Colonels won all but two bouts, including a 9-0 major decision win by Erik Smith (Danville, Pa./Danville) at 149 over Albert Gleichauf. “I think this is the first time we have put our entire team out,” head coach Jon Laudenslager said. “The guys wrestled really hard and we won all but one of the close matches.”
 
Shaun Farnham (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker), wrestling at 125, gave Wilkes the early lead with a 3-0 win over Jerrid Hartman. The victory improved him to 22-1 overall and has now won 19-straight matches. At 133, Josh Pauling (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville)'s match was even closer as he took a 3-2 win over Kyle Flickinger, giving the Colonels a 6-0 advantage.  
 
The Colonels would eventually lead 16-0 before York's John Niedrich put the Spartans on he board with a fall in 1:37. Brian Thomason gave York a second-straight win at 174 when he took a 5-4 win over Frank Heffernan (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh), making the score 16-9. The Spartans would come no closer as Wilkes would win the final two bouts, including a forfeit at 285. “They wrestled with heart and pride and it showed today This was a good win for us.” 
 
The win improves Wilkes to 11-4-1 overall and 4-1 in Metropolitan Conference action. The Colonels will return home next Friday when they host Delaware Valley at 7 p.m. in the Marts Center. 
 
A handful of wrestlers will head to Grantham for the Messiah Open starting at 10 a.m.
