The Wilkes University women’s soccer team traveled to Center Valley, Pa. on Saturday to take on conference foe DeSales University. The Lady Colonels needed a victory to grab the number four seed in the Freedom Conference Playoffs, and did exactly that, defeating the Bulldogs by a score of 4-1.
DeSales began the scoring in the match in the eighth minute when Emily LaDuke scored her fourth goal of the season, giving the Bulldogs an early lead. Wilkes didn’t take long to retaliate, and in the 13th minute Christina Stepansky found Jenna Sargent for her third goal on the year, tying the game up 1-1.
Six minutes later Jenna Sargent found Katy Fissel to put the Lady Colonels up 2-1 going into the half.
In the second period junior forward Taryn Hallowell assisted a goal by Megan Clementson, her fifth score of the year. With the game winding down senior forward Julissa Reed scored her team-high eighth goal of the year in the 85th minute, securing the victory and a Freedom Conference Playoff bid.
With the win the Lady Colonels improve to 7-8-3 on the year and 3-2-2 in Freedom Conference play. Their first playoff game will be at Manhattanville on Tuesday, Nov. 3. The start of that match is to be determined.
