WILKES TEAMS READY FOR FREEDOM CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS

The Wilkes athletic department will have four teams represented in the Freedom Conference Championships to be held this week in hopes of gaining a berth in the NCAA National Tournament.

Women’s Soccer
The No. 4 seeded Lady Colonels will head to Purchase, N.Y. for their 10-straight appearance in the Freedom Championship. They will take on top-seeded Manhattanville tomorrow 4 p.m. in a rematch from earlier this season.

In the first meeting, the Valiants scored two first half goals before Holly Nonis put in the third. Manhattanville finished with 19 total shots and eight on goal while Wilkes was held to five shots, three of which were on goal.

Wilkes will be looking to make the Freedom Conference finals for the third time and its second tournament championship since 2005.

Tickets for Tuesday’s matchup will be $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and $2 for all students. Children under the age of six will be admitted for free. Field Hockey
The Lady Colonels will enter the Freedom Conference Championship as the No. 2 seed and will host No. 3 seed King’s on Wednesday at 2:30 at Artillery Park in Kingston. The winner of the Wilkes/King’s matchup will take on the winner of the Eastern/Delaware Valley game for the Freedom Conference title on Saturday.

Wilkes will enter the contest with a 15-2 record and are currently ranked No. 14 in the womensfieldhockey.com national poll. The Lady Colonels will be going for their seventh-straight win against a Monarch team they defeated 3-2 earlier this season at King’s.

The Lady Colonels are outscoring their opponents 69-27 with freshman Jenna DiSabatino leading the way with 16 goals, 14 assists and a team-high 46 points. Senior Jennifer Keegan is right behind DiSabatino with 15 goals while sophomore Amanda Peters has 12 scores on the year.

Sophomore goalie Lindsey Davenport has been impressive in the cage with three shutouts on the year and a .757 save percentage.

Men’s Soccer
The Colonel soccer team will enter the Freedom Conference Championship as the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 2 seed Misericordia in Dallas at 4 p.m. Wednesday. They will try to avenge a 3-0 loss to the Cougars earlier this season and advance to the finals to play the winner of the Manhattanville/King’s matchup on Saturday.

Wilkes will head to Dallas with an 8-8-1 record including a 4-2-1 Freedom Conference record. Sean Vona has been the main offensive threat with five goals and an assist, while fellow senior Greg Miller has three goals to go along with three assists. Freshman Joe Brennan, who was named the Freedom Conference Soccer Player of the Week, has four scores on the year, including the game-winner against DeSales. Kaleb Smith, who was named the Freedom Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second-consecutive time, has five shutouts on the year and a .780 save percentage.

Volleyball
Wilkes will head to St. Davids to take on top-seeded Eastern at 7 p.m. on Wednesday for the semifinal round of the Freedom Conference Championship.

The Lady Colonels will enter the contest with a 16-11 record and are coming off a 3-0 sweep against Misericordia in the final regular season match of the year. Junior Marissa Harrison has been impressive all year with 402 kills and 273 digs, while Allison Kelleher set the school record for digs in a season with 512 and counting.

The two teams played once earlier this season with the Eagles taking a 3-0 lead in Wilkes-Barre.
