MICHELLE WAKELEY NAMED WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY MAC SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
 
ANNVILLE, PA – Wilkes University women's cross country standout Michelle Wakeley (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) has been named the 2011 Middle Atlantic Conference Women's Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year as announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon. Wakeley will be honored at a MAC awards luncheon in May
 
The Scholar-Athlete award is given to a senior in each men's and women's sport of each sport season. Nominees much have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least a 3.20 (4.0 scale). Historically, recipients hold GPA's north of 3.80 and are regarded as academic leaders in their respective sport.
 
The MAC Awards Committee bases selection of recipients on an even balance (50-50) of both academic and athletic prowess.
 
Wakeley earned First Team All-Conference honors as a senior finishing fourth at the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Championships with a time of 24:54. The Endicott, N.Y. native has re-written most of the school's record book holding the top eight times in school history, including two top ten times this season. Wakeley posted the fourth best time in program history this season at the NCAA Regionals finishing at 24:16. She recorded a school-record time of 24:01 in the MAC Championships as a junior earning Second Team All-Conference honors finishing in 14th place at the event.
 
A Biology major, Wakeley has also performed above and beyond in the classroom holding a 4.0 grade point average through the fall semester of her senior year.
