WILKES STUDENT-ATHLETES VOLUNTEER AT SPECIAL OLYMPICS BOWLING EVENT

WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes University student-athletes lent a helping hand Saturday, February 18 at the Luzerne County Chapter of the Special Olympics bowling event held at nearby Chako's bowling alley.

There are 118 athletes in the Luzerne Chapter of the Special Olympics.  The NCAA Division III has partnered with the Special Olympics using the Student Athlete Advisory Committees of university and college campuses to initiate support.

Several student-athletes from the Lady Colonels women's soccer and field hockey teams as well as members of the Colonel men's soccer squad volunteered at the event. "Volunteering at the Special Olympics bowling event was a rewarding experience,” said sophomore field hockey member Ashley Ream. “It was exciting to see such enthusiasm and sportsmanship from the athletes even if they weren't getting strikes every time."

The event lasted from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. providing the participants a chance to bowl complete games. "The Special Olympians were so enthusiastic and inspiring leading to an amazing experience that I wish I can do again,” explained sophomore women's soccer player Molly Martin.
