PAUL HUCH NAMED MAC MEN'S BASKETBALL SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

ANNVILLE -- Wilkes University men's basketball standout Paul Huch (Tuckerton, NJ/Pinelands Regional) has been named the 2011-12 Middle Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year as announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon. Huch will be honored at a MAC awards luncheon in early May.

The Scholar-Athlete award is given to a senior in each men's and women's sport of each sport season. Nominees much have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least a 3.20 (4.0 scale). Historically, recipients hold GPA's north of 3.80 and are regarded as academic leaders in their respective sport.

The MAC Awards Committee bases selection of recipients on an even balance (50-50) of both academic and athletic prowess.

Huch, a second team All-Freedom selection, continued to show his versatility on the floor in his final campaign for the Colonels averaging 15.0 points (9th in Freedom) and a team-best 8.3 rebounds (4th in Freedom) reaching double figures in 20 contests. At 6'6, Huch tortured opposing defenses with his sharpshooting from behind the three-point line hitting on 52.4 percent (43-82) from long range, tops in the Freedom Conference.

His best outing came in a victory over Marywood where the Tuckerton, NJ native poured in a career-high 29 points, five rebounds, two blocks and four steals. Huch and the Colonels finished 17-10 falling in the Freedom Conference championship game at Misericordia. Wilkes made an ECAC postseason appearance for the first time since the 1993-94 season.

“This is just an outstanding accomplishment for Paul,” commented head coach Jerry Rickrode. “The award represents a complete body of work over a four year period.  Paul has been so consistent in his work ethic both on and off the court and he is very deserving of this accolade”.

A Psychology major, Huch has also performed above and beyond in the classroom holding a 3.80 grade point average through the fall semester.

Huch becomes the second Wilkes student-athlete to earn the prestigious award joining Michelle Wakeley, who was named the MAC Women's Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year in the fall.
