FISSEL, ROBERTS READY FOR WPSL PLAY THIS SUMMER

WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes University women's soccer standouts Katy Fissel (Madison, NJ/Madison) and Alicia Roberts (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland) will both be playing in the Women's Premier Soccer League this summer respectively with the Millburn Magic and Buxmont Torch.

The Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) is a 50-plus team national pro-am league and is the largest women's soccer league in the world. The league was formed in 1998 and is sanctioned by the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) as an affiliate of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF). The WPSL's mission is to provide the highest level of soccer in our effort to: bring affordable & quality family entertainment to the community; display positive role models for our youth; while, being a stepping stone for aspiring professional & international-level players.

“I'm excited for both Katy and Ali to play at the highest level possible this summer,” said head coach John Sumoski. “The league allows them to stay fit, and improve their game because the pace is faster than they are used to which will force them to make quicker decisions and learn how to play in tighter spaces at speed,” he added.

Fissel, a second team NSCAA All-Mid Atlantic selection and ECAC All-Star, was fourth on the team in scoring in 2011 finishing with 10 points on three goals and four assists playing in 13 of the Lady Colonels 17 contests. She also earned her third straight All-Freedom honor being named a first team midfielder. Fissel returns to the Lady Colonel lineup in 2012 but first looks to sharpen her skills this summer in the WPSL.

“The league has grown tremendously this year and the level of play is great to keep my skills and touches crisp and fitness high,” commented Fissel.

Roberts enjoyed a fine rookie season for the Lady Colonels finishing third on the team in scoring with 12 points on five goals and two assists in 17 games. The Hatboro, Pa. native played mostly on the Wilkes frontline at both forward positions.

“I'm just really excited to play in one of the best women's amateur leagues in the country,” stated Roberts. “I look forward to playing some really talented players and learning alot along the way”. “It is awesome to get this experience at a young age.”

Fissel and Roberts will meet in Madison, NJ on June 19th at 6.30 p.m.
