WILKES TO ADD TWO NCAA DIVISION III INTERCOLLEGIATE SPORTS
WILKES-BARRE, PA – Wilkes University is proud to announce that it will add two NCAA Division III intercollegiate sports in women's golf and women's swimming. Both sports will begin competition starting with the 2014-15 season in the Middle Atlantic Conference.
The expansion will increase the number of intercollegiate offerings at Wilkes to 18 with eight men's sports (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and wrestling) and 10 women's sports (basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball).
"The addition of women's swimming and women's golf will add to our already strong and competitive sport offerings at Wilkes," Director of Athletics Addy Malatesta said.
The conference is excited about Wilkes adding both women's golf and swimming," conference Executive Director Ken Andrews said. "As a conference we went from not many schools sponsoring women's swimming to now 10 schools with the addition of Wilkes." "It broadens Wilkes athletics program and will only help our conference with automatic qualifying bids in the future," he added.
Wilkes will look to hire a part time coach in women's swimming this fall while assistant football coach Harry Armstrong will take the reins of the women's golf program. Both coaches will begin recruiting immediately for the 2014-15 season.
