Nine former/current tennis stars were named to the MAC All-Century Tennis Teams Tuesday afternoon NINE FORMER/CURRENT WILKES TENNIS STARS NAMED TO MAC ALL-CENTURY TEAMS 6/4/2013 1:44:00 PM NINE FORMER/CURRENT WILKES TENNIS STARS NAMED TO MAC ALL-CENTURY TEAMS ANNVILLE, PA – Nine former/current Wilkes University tennis standouts were named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Spring All-Century Teams as announced by the conference office Tuesday. Two Colonel men's tennis players were selected, while seven former Lady Colonel tennis greats garnered spots on the teams. Current Wilkes junior standout Alex Makos (Mansfield, PA/Mansfield) and Kyle Ungvarsky '09 were both named to the 2004-2012 era of the men's tennis teams. Ungvarsky was a four-time First Team All-Freedom selection capturing the MAC Individual singles title at No. 4 and No. 1 doubles crown during the 2008-09 season, his senior year. Makos continues to grow his decorated career as a Colonel recently being named to the All-Freedom First Team for the second straight year while leading Wilkes to its sixth straight Freedom championship. He captured the MAC Individual No. 6 singles title as a freshman before teaming with Steven Wilson (Bronx, NY/JFK) to win the No. 1 doubles crown this past year (2012-13). On the women's side, seven Lady Colonels were selected to the teams with three from the 1994-2003 era and four from the 2004-2012 era. Whitney Bull, Karen Beling, and Jessica Bixler garnered spots on the 1994-2003 era, while Katie Lynn (Berwick, PA/Berwick) '13, Melanie Nolt (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) '13, Victoria Bybel '11, and Xiaoqiao Zhang '10 were chosen on the 2004-2012 era. Bull was a two-time All-Freedom First Team selection from 2001-2003. Beling and Bixler both starred on the 1993 Wilkes team. Lynn emerged as a fixture at the No. 2 and 3 positions in the Wilkes lineup during the last four years as the Lady Colonels captured four straight Freedom crowns during her time. A four-time All-Freedom First Team selection, Lynn finished her career with a 49-19 singles record and 61-15 doubles mark. Nolt, the most decorated women's tennis player ever to play at Wilkes, earned four straight Freedom Conference Player of the Year honors after leading the squad to four straight titles and NCAA Tournament berths. Nolt finished her career with the second most singles wins in program history (60) all from the No. 1 position in the Wilkes lineup. Bybel, a four-time All-Freedom selection (twice a first team choice and twice a second team selection), helped lead the Wilkes program to four straight Freedom titles from 2007-2011. She finished her career with a 49-18 singles mark and a 58-14 record in doubles play. Bybel was named Freedom Conference Player of the Year in 2008-09 while being selected as Rookie of the Year as a freshman during the 2007-08 season. Zhang, a four-time All-Freedom First Team performer and Freedom Conference Player of the Year in 2006-07, finished her Wilkes career with a 60-6 singles mark and 53-17 record in doubles competition. She was also part of four straight Freedom league titles from 2006-2010. She currently serves as the International Admissions Coordinator at Wilkes. As a part of the MAC 100 celebration, the Middle Atlantic Conference is recognizing top athletes from conference history, naming student-athletes to Century Teams in each sport from each era. Eras were delineated based on conference membership and sport sponsorship. The number of individuals selected per team varies depending upon the nature of the sport. Century Teams were selected from an online fan vote combined with the MAC Sports Information Directors vote. Print Friendly Version
