MCANENA'S BRACE LIFTS WILKES OVER STEVENSON 2-1

EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The Wilkes University men's soccer team won their first home match of the season, with Junior Eric McAnena (Horsham, PA/Abington) scoring a pair of goals in the second half to propel the Colonels to victory.  With the win the Colonels record stands at 2-1, while Stevenson University falls to 2-1-1.

Wilkes fell behind 1-0 in the 24th minute when Yianni Sarioglou was able to cut a Wilkes defender inside to his right foot where he finished a near post shot from eight yards out.  The Colonels generated a few quality chances in the first half, but were never able to get in behind the Mustangs defense to become dangerous.

The Colonels intensity in the second half increased and the momentum swung to the home side as Wilkes was able to even the score up at one in the 53rd minute.  McAnena was able to slice and dice his way through the Mustangs backline and sneak a shot in off of the keeper and into the near post.  Just 13 minutes later McAnena once again beat a few defenders off the ball with his dribble which created enough space for him to crack a shot from 25 yards out into the side netting, giving Wilkes the 2-1 advantage.

The Mustangs regained momentum after the Wilkes goal and nearly tied the match if it wasn't for the brilliant defensive play by Alex Benne (Birdsboro, PA/Daniel Boone) who was able to block a shot destined for the side net with his head, sending the ball out past the 18 yard box.

Patrick Loube (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) made 8 saves on the afternoon picking up his first victory of the 2013 season.

The Colonels return to action tomorrow when they take on Widener University at 2:00 P.M. at Schmidt Stadium.
