Sarah Maulorico Named New Head Softball Coach at Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes University Director of Athletics Addy Malatesta has announced the hiring of Sarah Maulorico as the school's new head softball coach.

Maulorico takes over for long-time mentor Frank Matthews, who retired after fifteen years at the helm of the program this past spring season.

"It is a great honor to be named the next softball coach at Wilkes University," Maulorico said. "I look forward to working with the student-athletes to build on the program's tradition and helping lead the Lady Colonels to prominence in the Freedom Conference. I am thankful to Addy Malatesta and the Wilkes University community for the opportunity to be a head coach at the Division III level and excited to move on to this new chapter in my career".

Maulorico comes to Wilkes after a one-year stint at the University of Delaware where she served as the Blue Hens' pitching coach. At Delaware, she coached three players who were selected to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) All-Conference squad as well as two All-Rookie team honors. Her pitching staff earned two CAA Pitcher of the Week honors under her leadership last spring.

"Wilkes University is the place I see myself achieving my long term career goals," Maulorico explained. "The educational opportunities available to student-athletes, beautiful campus and stellar athletic facilities are exactly what I had in mind when I set out to become a head softball coach. The University and its community offer everything needed to develop a program that is nationally competitive at the Division III level while also turning out well rounded student-athletes".

Prior to Delaware, she spent five seasons as an assistant at Division III Moravian College, including her final season as associate head coach. During her tenure in Bethlehem, Pa., Maulorico helped lead the Greyhounds to three consecutive Landmark Conference championships and NCAA Eastern Regional appearances. Moravian went 34-15 and advanced to the Division III Women's College World Series in 2010, while the staff was named the Division III Eastern Regional Coaching Staff of the Year.

The Greyhounds went a combined 165-55 during Maulorico's five seasons, as the Moravian pitching staff posted sub-2.00 earned run averages from 2010-12 including a low of 1.58 in 2010. Six different Moravian pitchers fired seven no-hitters over the last five years, including one perfect game. At the plate the Greyhounds hit over .325 during each of the last four seasons, increasing the team average each year, and ranked second in the nation with a .381 average this past spring.

During her time at Moravian Maulorico coached two All-Americans and eight All-Region players, while 14 Greyhounds earned NFCA Scholar All-America honors.

"In addition to the Wilkes athletics community, I am beyond grateful to Moravian head softball coach John Byrne for the opportunity he gave six years ago when he welcomed me to his staff," Maulorico noted. "I look forward to applying all of the invaluable information I gathered under his tutelage".

Prior to arriving in Bethlehem, Maulorico spent four seasons as the head coach at Western Christian High School in Covina, Calif., after serving as assistant coach in 2005.

Maulorico was a standout catcher at Mississippi University for Women, earning first team Gulf South Conference, first team All-Southern Region and second team All-American honors in 2003. She began her career at Southern Mississippi when she was a member of the 1999 Golden Eagles squad that advanced to the NCAA Division I Women's College World Series, before spending one season at the University of New Mexico. Later, Maulorico earned her master's degree in special education with an emphasis in gifted learning from the University of Missouri in 2012.

Maulorico begins her duties at Wilkes on July 27.
