Ritter, Medrow Key Pins Lift Wilkes Wrestling Over Elizabethtown 24-19
WILKES-BARRE –
Kyle Medrow (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) and
John Ritter (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) each scored falls for Wilkes to lift the Colonels to a 24-19 dual match victory over Elizabethtown College Friday night at the Marts Center.
With the win Wilkes evened its dual match record at 6-6 while Elizabethtown fell to 1-2 on the season.
Elizabethtown took a 5-0 lead starting the match with a technical fall at 197-pounds.
Jacob Huling (Jersey Shore, PA/Jersey Shore) wrestled up a class at heavyweight narrowly missing out on a win as Eric Eckstein held a 3-2 lead early in the third period then sealed the bout with a takedown under 13 seconds as the Blue Jay lead grew to 8-0.
At 125-pounds
Kyle Trout (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) battled back from three points down claiming a takedown with 1:15 left in the third period, but a Blue Jay reversal ten seconds later kept the Colonels off the board with Elizabethtown leading 11-0. 133-pounds saw a bout that went down to the last second as
Jake Dimarsico (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) moved to 7-3 overall on the year after earning a 3-1 decision win. The bout was tied at 1-1 late in the third with both wrestlers earning an escape. Dimarsico waited until the last moment of the match posting a takedown as time expired in the third. Wilkes trailed 11-3 after four bouts.
At 141-pounds sixth ranked
Matthew Grossmann (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) earned his 83
rd career victory besting Josh Paisley by a 7-2 decision as the Colonels continued to climb back into the match down 11-6. At 149-pounds ninth ranked Joseph Ghionee posted a 16-7 major decision over
Josh Evans (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton) to extend the Blue Jay advantage to 15-6.
Medrow made quick work of his opponent at 157-pounds earning the fall in 1:53 of the first period bringing the Colonels to within three down 15-12 with two bouts remaining. The win was Medrow's seventh of the season. Elizabethtown kept its lead with a major decision win at 165-pounds. With Wilkes receiving a forfeit at 184-pounds, the match would come down to the last bout at 174-pounds with Elizabethtown holding a 19-18 advantage.
Ritter played the hero for Wilkes pinning Tyler Mentzer in 3:24 to secure the Colonel victory 24-19.
Wilkes has a quick turnaround wrestling at the Grapple at the Garden in New York City Sunday with matches against No. 3 Stevens at 12:00 p.m. and LIU Post at 1:45 p.m.
