Wilkes Softball opens 2017 MAC Freedom Tournament with a 9-1 Setback to King's
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Wilkes University softball team opened its first appearance in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom tournament since 2008 with a 9-1 loss to King's College at Delaware Valley University on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Colonels are now 24-15 overall.
King's jumped out in front in the top of the second with one run on one hit and expanded its lead to 4-0 in the top of the third with three runs on three hits and three Lady Colonel miscues.
The Monarch's took a 7-0 lead in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs on four hits.
Wilkes got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, scoring one runs on one hit.
Celine Podlesney (Hazle Twp., PA/Hazleton) led off the inning with a single to right center and was pinch-run for by
Mia Lussier (Somerset, MA/Somerset Berkley). After
Sarah Gibson (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley) walked, both runners moved up on
Caitlin Brown (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove)'s fly out to center field before
Haley Welker (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) lined out to right field to bring home Lussier and cut the deficit to 7-1.
King's finished its scoring in the top of the seventh with two runs on three hits.
Podlensey fell to 9-7, surrendering six runs (three earned) on eight hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Podlesney led the Lady Colonels at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 while Gibson and
Christina Gambino (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) had one hit each.
Wilkes returns to the field against Misericordia in an elimination game starting at 4:00 p.m.
